Charlie Shields

Charlie Shields is an MSc student in Building Science at the University of Alberta, supervised by Dr. Yuxiang Chen. His research focuses on improving the energy performance of masonry building envelopes using machine learning and computational modeling.

His current project, Machine Learning-Based Surrogate Modeling for Efficient Estimation of Linear Transmittance in Brick Veneer Building Envelopes, aims to develop faster and more accurate tools for evaluating thermal performance in masonry wall systems. Recent advancements include expanding the models to represent more detailed wall assemblies and improving prediction accuracy through separate modeling of geometric and material properties.

Charlie previously completed the University of Alberta’s Mechanical Engineering Co-op program, where a co-op placement with Dr. Chen sparked his interest in masonry building envelope design. He has presented his work at the 15th Annual Masonry Symposium (2025) and was awarded a University of Alberta Sustainability Grant (2024). Following his MSc, Charlie plans to continue research and innovation in building science while pursuing entrepreneurial opportunities in the engineering sector.
